The Future Fabrics Expo 2022: Highlights

The 10th edition of the future fabrics expo 2022 showcased materials with low impact on the environment with regenerative and circular practices in mind. This expo was held in London and showcased thousands of commercially available fabrics and materials which represent a comprehensive sourcing hub.

Visitors to the event had a chance to speak with experts and see newer fabrics via QR code which links back to the website for more information.

Innovation

In the innovation category, this expo highlighted Parley’s Ocean themes, like fibers made with algae or Alginate Bioplastic. In bioengineered innovations, mycelium-based materials from Evocative and Osmose Studio were showcased. Furthermore, new technology such as agricultural waste innovations was also highlighted.

Denim

In the denim category, low-impact fiber such as hemp, Tencel lyocell and bio-based synthetics was seen. Another highlight of this category is recycled fiber. Maritas Denim showcased its recycled fibers. Engineered surface pattern and texture reduce the washing process and advanced denim creates a base for laser-friendly designs with smooth surfaces.

Low-impact Cotton

Recycled cotton and 100% organic cotton were highlights of this section of the expo. Recycled cotton reduces waste. Koua Studios showcased how it works with indigenous people in Mexico to produce GRS-certified recycled cotton yarns.

Man-made Cellulose Fibers

Fibers sourced from raw wood bring softness and a deep and silky sheen. This fiber blends well with natural fibers. Lenzing offers three Tencel qualities – lyocell, modal and lyocell filament. Shinjantex, a Korean supplier uses the Tencel modal due to its eco-soft qualities. The yarn is made from upcycled cotton scraps with wood pulp.

Trims and Decorations

YKK showcased detachable buttons for the denim industry. Botanica Tinctoria offers organic cotton hand-crochet tapes for farmers in India. Hemp use is increasing due to it being a very sustainable fiber. Hemp was showcased at the expo as the plant is fast-growing, biodegradable, and durable. Ecological Textiles, a Netherlands-based supplier uses hemp in trim tapes.

Performance Materials

Nylon is repeatedly recyclable, which makes it ideal for product circularity. Recyctex, a China-based company uses chemicals to transform nylon waste into ECONYL regenerated nylon. This material is light, durable and abrasion resistant. The material is commonly used in PET bottles. On the other hand, Stotz & Co Ag teamed up with Ventile organic cotton to create cotton that rivals synthetics in performance and durability.

Key Points

  1. Natural and regenerative fibers that have a low impact on the environment should be prioritized
  2. Reliable, ethical, and sustainable suppliers create a strong supply chain
  3. Transparency should be practised both in product and employees
  4. Sustainability is not just raw materials but also includes designs and production
